Hello, as your financial advisor,
I will ask for your trust, so I think it is important that you know
some things about me on a personal and professional level. It hard to
condense my life experiences to a single web page, however, if I
become too wordy please feel free to surf to a more meaningful
section.
I was born Jan. 31, 1956 in Saint John, New
Brunswick, to French-Canadian parents. My parents never had much
formal education but they were intelligent and adventuresome. They
lived through the depression and after W.W.II moved to the industrial
and english city of Saint John. Generally, I had a happy childhood,
playing baseball in the summer and hockey and sledding in the winter.
Money was tight but we never had to do without the essentials, and
finances were not a concern to me growing up, I got my first job after
high school graduation only three months before heading off to
Halifax, NS for university.
In 1974, I attended Dalhousie
University on scholarship and took pre-med. courses. Unlike most of my
friends who did become doctors, I was drawn towards the logic and
excitement of the business world (and away from the blood, and
disease). After six years of study, I graduated with a Bachelor of
Science (chemistry major) and an MBA with a double major in accounting
and finance. I also met my wife, Cathy, and we were married in 1980, 3
months after graduation. At that time, I had a stereo and a $10,000
student debt, while Cathy had a new compact car and somewhat better
furniture, so together I figured we had approximately zero net worth;
but a wealth of opportunity and potential.
Eager to start a
new life together, we moved to Toronto, Ontario, and pursued corporate
careers. I acquired a position in the finance department at IBM
Canadian headquarters. Over the next 10 years we lived a typical
yuppie lifestyle with winter vacations in the Caribbean, a 25 foot
sailboat and a sports car. On a corporate level, I received four
promotions and held six different positions ranging from manufacturing
to pricing multi-million sales proposals at IBM.
However,
after a ten year career, (yes Im vested), once again the urge
for change had us exploring different options and we entered the U.S.
immigration lottery. This program granted green card
residency to the winners and when our number came up we
quit our corporate jobs and moved, sight unseen, to Sarasota, FL in
1990. Also, earlier that year, my first daughter, Nikki, was born.
Fortunately, we had accumulated investments and home equity over the
years and, after our arrival, I had the luxury to explore many new
career choices. During a six month hiatus, at a gulf coast beach
house, I passed the NASD Series 7 stockbrokers exam. I also
started my accounting and tax practice to support business owners and
others in the local community. Business grew steadily and PLUS
Financial Services was incorporated in 1993, The same year my second
daughter, Dani was born.
Over the years, I have continued to
upgrade my financial skills, I acquired an Enrolled Agent (EA),
designation from the IRS which recognizes me as a tax professional who
can represent all current and future clients, so our clients rarely
have to deal directly with the IRS. I also passed the NASD securities
exam for supervisors and became a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA)
in the State of Florida. I have always had a fascination with
investments and this is one area I particularly enjoy, especially
since the arrival of the Web and its real time information and on-line
trading.
I am a certified Quickbooks ProAdvisor and spend
much of my time working with small businesses in the set-up and
maintenance of the program, hence,
quickbookswiz.com
On a personal level, first of all, I like to spend time
with my family, friends and relatives. I am a firm believer of time
off from work to rejuvenate the spirit, and it really is one of the
fruits of our labor. I also like to play golf and consider myself an
amateur astronomer. Mostly I just like to hang around my home and
property planning improvements, and avoiding small maintenance jobs.
During my 20 years of corporate and small business experience I have
been fortunate to work with many talented, hard working, bright
individuals. Working with entrepreneurs and investors I have
witnessed, and been part of, some impressive success stories. and most
are still evolving, including my own.
I feel very fortunate
for my family, our good health, and being able to derive a comfortable
lifestyle doing something I really enjoy. As we enter the new
millennium, I look forward to helping others achieve financial success
and wish everyone good fortune and good planning. Thank you.
